Which leads me to Creative Blocks and Trying to get your Mojo back!

Finishing a new piece during trying times is a challenge and especially when "Life" as we know it gets in the way!  Try as I might to stay on a daily painting schedule, things like my recent knee surgery get in the way.  As well as family health issues and TIME........ T I M E!  Well, the lack of it for that matter.

This spurred me on to write a little about creative blocks and staying motivated when life doesn't want you to be.  Although I am working on the composition of a new larger piece for my drawing board, I thought readers might find interest in some of the info I have realized myself or found thru periods of struggling.

It seems many of my artist friends and students also have issues with Creative Block, Procrastinating etc.  If you search the internet their are many articles by creatives that talk specifically about it.  Blogs, VLogs you name it.  You may have actually found this article by web searching, because you find your self floating in this deep sea of frustration right now!

If your a writer or other creative, substitute writing for painting and my ideas may help you too.  Or whatever word is your creative “Doing"

I find when myself or other art friends have a block it comes at times of frustration with their skill level, a critic’s or instructors unkind comment on their work or other emotional upheaval, health issues and burn out from over commitments in various facets of life.  Many of my students never unpack their art bag until class the next week.  And that’s fine but if you have intentions for being an artist or being productive in any creative process read on.  

Being a late comer to making art full-time (in my early 40’s) I often felt a sense of not having enough time to learn to paint all I want to.  Enough time to get “good” and build a resume as an artist. Frankly I still hear the clock ticking!  When the creative block hits, and the fog sets in, (and believe me, it usually does) I feel like I will never get “There”.  

“There” for me is being a professional artist.  If it’s the same for you or you just want to make some art without blocks this article may help you.

So this little blog is for you, my students and myself.  Yes, sometimes when your as thick minded as I am, you need to nurture or remind “You” often of 4 Essential of being an artist and the list of #10 Block breaker tips that will follow in a 2nd blog post yet to follow.  You may have read some of this before however really knowing it and “doing” it are two very different things.  

4 Essentials of being an Artist - Or Staying On track if you are one. 

SPACE #1 - Have a special place just for you and your art.  Studios are wonderful and I love mine. But before I had one, a small place to work, cabinet, tub tote bag for storing your supplies is essential.  Your art deserves that!  You deserve that!  Caution! Make sure you see it everyday, and don’t close it behind a never opened door.  One of the great things about art supplies is they are colorful and can be displayed in an artistic manner.  Colored pencils in cups or mugs showing their rainbow of colors just beg to be used.  Brushes in an urn filled with pebbles on display.  Art pens in a roll ready to pick up and go.  Decorated journals at the ready and inviting to use are just a few ideas. (Drop a small one in your purse or computer bag!)

If your lucky enough to have a studio for your art make it an inviting place.  After all it’s your Art Home-Space, you will want to be there.  Not a hot attic or cold dark basement, temperate,  with good lighting, and don’t forget a comfy chair for the next #2 is essential. 

Neatness - Keeping my studio neat, clean and where I can find things helps me feel like going into my space. No one wants to try working when they cannot find their easel or drawing table. I usually pick up as part of my finishing a painting ritual.  Put on some celebration music and go to town.  I actually have my own playlist for the process, “cue" Ferrel William’s song “Happy”.   Yours may not be as goofy as mine but for me being happy about finishing a piece leads to making more art.   

Caution: I often find it’s very easy to make myself busy by re-orgaizing my studio, which can lead to procrastination.

INSPIRATION #2 - Going out to experience Galleries, Museums, Nature walks, Your Garden, or People watching. The obvious things like finding new Art Books and Magazines or using the Internet (caution see #4), or your journal (see #4) are always helpful.  

I even find home decorating magazines inspirational.  Pick up a decorators magazine and envision one of your paintings above the mantel of a grand house.  How big would it need to be to have presence?  What colors would it need to have to go with the current trends?  Is that your palette?  Perhaps updating your palette may change it up enough will spur on your flow!  Perhaps working bigger or zooming in and blowing things up may change your work in an exciting way.  Clientele that can afford to buy original art have homes to decorate.  And while I’m not advocating you paint to match someones sofa it is a fact of life.  Higher priced art sells to collectors with larger spaces and new homes to decorate!  

Paint for you, if you like it you will do your best work!  If a subject inspired you it will show in your work and inspire others.


SPIRIT #3- Attitude :))
Your art spirit is a precious commodity.  Nurture it, protect it and mother it, just as you would a small child.  We are our own worst enemy, those dark voices come at us when we feel like a piece is not working out or doesn’t sell.  While a little self critic is part of the process of making good art, self doubt is it’s enemy.  Hopefully your parents or a good teacher encouraged you and gently reminded you of the how to’s and said it’s all in your attitude. :))  So BE that positive voice in your head!  An artist I love for her great attitude is Dreama Tolle Perry is a master of feel good, you can find her at:

Be positive, non-competitive, inspire others, and above all else kind to you.  Compete only with the artist you were yesterday, last week or last year.  When you keep working, the negative chatter loses its power. Inspire others, teach what you know to new beginning artists.  Sometimes I hear myself telling my students an art concept or tip and I realize I needed to hear it too!  They make me a better teacher.
  
Be Resilient and Kind to you, don’t let anyone take you art away from you by believing what they have to say.  Take in criticism but don’t let it take you over.  When your ready to look at your work kindly and critically, note the comments made and decide for yourself if it’s a quality issue, a style thing or what you put value in as a goal to correct.  I had a nationally acclaimed workshop teacher once make negative comments on a piece I had done outside of her workshop.  She didn’t like my application of over 25 layers obliterating all signs of paper speckle, saturating like paint with my dry media.  Only to find out it’s what my buyer’s and students loved most about my work.  It’s what made my work unique in style and not like her’s.  Subsequently I earned an award for the very piece she critiqued so harshly.  

Be Curious, be a Seeker
I hate the phrase "curiosity killed the cat”.  Being curious, ready to learn and Observe makes any professional better, no matter what your field. Take a second look at your subject from life and don’t rely on what the photo says.  Be curious to say "what if”, I promise you good things can come from it.  Experiment,  It’s only paper if it’s a sketchbook (insert your surface here), you can start over, wipe it off, try again. The “doing" is all in the trying.

When I'm in a museum of really exceptional work, I bring along a my mini purse size sketchbook to make notes of how an artist handled a goal I have.  Or to note an artists name to research their work further.  Actually I carry this little journal everywhere! see #4.

Create Quality Art
Use quality, archival and artist grade materials to create confidence in your buyers.  Frame well and neatly.  Know your process and go back to it when your in doubt.  

Confidence comes in the doing, doing and doing again. Keeping a sketchbook helps you build confidence.  Dating your pages can help you realize you really are making progress in your skills as you get to the end of the book.  Drawing, watercolor, gouache, even oils can be done on sketchbooks or pads of paper.  (Specific media paper sketchbooks are very easily obtained by art suppliers.)

Gain or have respect for the Job!  In my life I have been a Yes person way too much, always hating to disappoint anyone especially my family!  Children, grandchildren, siblings, friends and students.  Being a self employed artist and teacher is hard work. Gaining respect for working from my home studio is not easy, even in my own loving family.  I had to stop saying “Sorry I’m painting tomorrow", and say "I’m working" instead.  Folks outside of the art/creative field often see the "making" not the hard work it is.  They may say “oh I can’t draw, wish I could”  but they don’t see that the “doing” of it is hard work, practice, many many hours, failure, frustration, all before it’s successfully done.  Then there is the marketing, sales, inventory, bookkeeping, website updates, social media and all other hats to wear being a sole proprietor.  PHEW!!!  A company of ONE is not easy.  Teach others to respect your art business as just that.


TIME #4 -  We all think we’ll have all the time in the world of “someday".  I have an eye condition in my retinas, and when I found it could change my someday - I finally took a pay cut and left my corporate job to pursue ART.  I was fortunate to be able to have a spouse who encouraged me to do it.   

When I'm are not in a place with my supplies I do"Mind Painting".  Purposely observing details, shape, light, shadow, color as if I were painting it but without supplies.  Murphy’s Law - "Something awesome is in view right ahead and I’m driving or don’t have my phone/camera with me."   I so wish I had photographic eyes where I could just blink and have it saved for future reference.  But it can also be a good practice to do before you begin to “Plein Air Paint” (Open air paint), as a planning sort of observation, or anytime you start a work from life.  It helps to settle your thoughts on what’s in front of you.

Example: We are stuck in traffic and my sweet hubby is driving (key point here is your NOT driving! NOT GOOD or SAFE!)  Hubby is frustrated but I make good use of my time by r-r-r-e-e-a-al-ll-yy  looking at those clouds ahead.  Noticing how the light hits just the right spot from behind and making the glow of some edges and the billowy softness of other edges.  How purple-ish grey from the buildings or how greens bounce off from the trees on the ground into the cloud's underbelly.  

I find the more "I mind paint" the more I remember a subject  for future paintings.  Using this technique can help when your sketching from memory too.  So if you catch me starring off into the air now you know…..I’m not crazy, I'm painting.  Many of the items in the next blog post are part of my Block Breaker List may help you by finding the time to be creative.

A word about Journaling or Sketchbooks  

I hate to say it again but…ah….sketchbooks.......  
They can go anywhere you do, waiting in the car or Dr. office?  Instead of pulling out your phone and playing a game, re-checking email or Facebook use one!  They can be pocket size or purse size.  With as little as a pencil or pen to render with, or a few watercolor pencils and a water brush.  Or you can always hit them with water when you get home.  I have a small one in my purse all the time, another in my car for when I’m waiting for an oil change and I have a travel kit for vacations.  Travel journaling informs me of colors, location names, dates of reference photos I take intending to paint from later.  In short they actually make me remember a “Place” thru my artist eyes and thus I get more immersed in a trip or location.

40th World Sketch Day - Sketches

Some of you may not have heard of a "Sketch Craw"  or World Sketch Day but it's kind of like an Internationally observed day to sketch everywhere around the world.  Oh no, now I have the Martha and The Vandellas song "Dancing In The Street" playing in my head.  Anyway, it's also kind of like a college bar crawl, going from place to place sketching for the day.  Wine or alcohol optional, but sketching your lunch is encouraged.  I however only had a few hours in the morning to spare so I invited lots of friends, students and other known sketchers to participate.  For more information see link:

The crazy weather we have had here in VA had me searching for an indoor/outdoor location close to home (due to a busy schedule), and of course a bathroom since there will be coffee involved ;-).  It seems the more I try to plan anything outdoors the rains come and ruin it.  So with coffee in hand, my small sketch kit and a folding chair I headed off to a local nursery to get started.

It is advisable if your inviting friends to a business location to call in advance to get permission.  In this case Richmond's "Great Big Greenhouse" was gracious enough to let us come in early at 8 AM.  A really nice nursery with wonderful plants inside and out.  It was really hard to NOT shop for plants and great garden and home accessories but get down to the business of sketching.



So I placed myself near the front entrance in the greenhouse so I could be aware of the few who said they might join me.  Near the collection of indoor ferns on sale.  After getting started on a small vignette at the edge of the plant table I greeted a previous student of mine, Cheryl who was happy for an excuse to get out sketch, shop and catch up.  You know this is also a great social event, if others hadn't been on summer vacation several others said they would have come.  Here's a photo of the ferns from my iphone:




I actually sat a little lower than this view when I did the above sketch.  The day went from threatening clouds to sunny skies so I opted to stay in the greenhouse.   I next moved on the Bonsai plant area which I love, and found a really neat asian garden lantern.  Since I'm on a quest to learn pen and ink sketching, I'm currently leaching myself this thru a 75 Day Sketch Challenge.  Only Ink is allowed, no pencil underneath  just ink.  I started this on June the 28th and will end it on Sept. 10th.  Each day you have to sketch something in your journal for 75 days.  I figure this would make me practice a more sure line, since it can't be erased or camouflaged by adding color.  Brenda Swenson started this challenge on her blog at:  brendaswenson.blogspot.com/    She's a water color and ink sketcher and does some really great work.  So as I bungle thru sketching with a micron pen in a Dick Blick ink sketchbook I received as a promotion, I'm learning to shade, hatch and double hatch my way thru the challenge.  I hope by day 75 it gets easier and faster and maybe a tiny bit better.  (By the way I'm going to have to check out this sketchbook more as it does not show bleed thru, is smooth for the pen and it's soft grey sheets would take some white pencil for highlights. After the challenge that is. )


I actually love journaling, travel journaling and working my way thru new challenges.  Sketchbooks need only be for you, not shared or publicized but enjoyed.  Getting out my first sketches always makes me feel better about how far I have come on my art journey.  Danny Gregory, author of "An Illustrated Life" and "An Illustrated Journey" encourages folks to journal, and document, but most of all enjoy the process.   Although many do so in watercolor and pen, I choose to mainly work in my beloved colored pencil, but still I can see the use of ink when called for and definitely for the script part of the page.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend, whether on not you observed World Sketch Day or not.  The next one should be in October this year as they seem to do 4 per year.  Grab your sketchbook and whatever your favorite media or just a regular pencil and try it.  I know next time I'm planning on making it past lunchtime before I cave in and shop!  ;-) Keep it colorful!

Provence Trip and a few Plein Airs finished

Well finally I've scanned two of the Plein Air pieces done almost completely on site.  Both are on
Ampersand Pastelboard this first one on white and the 2nd one on the green pastelboard.  I prefer the white as the green or colors make bright whites a chore.   The Lourmarin turret turned into a home was completed with a underpainting of Watercolor Colored Pencils (Caran D'Ache) with layered  Premier Prismacolors completed on top.  Before starting the piece I photographed the scene and did a quick graphite study for composition purposes in my sketch book.   (I tried to scan it but the sketch doesn't want to show up well, sorry.)  I used the wc cp's to quickly tone the background area leaving the sky untouched.  When the wc cp was dry which happened quickly on site because of the dry warm day in July.  I then worked the sky.  Wanting to capture the atmosphere from morning haze still in the Luberon mountains behind.  Working small in Plein Air cp has become a must for my getting near completion in one day, but the sanded surface helps work much more quickly.

The Roussillon piece was started on a very windy morning sitting in the parking lot across from this hillside town.  Roussillon is where natural sienna pigments are found in the ground and the hues are amazing.  I did not do a composition sketch before starting this, nor did I do a WC CP underpainting, just straight Prismas onto the board.  Because this board was green to start with I mapped out a sketch with white cp lightly to build the drawing.  The day was so windy I had to leave halfway done and finish back at the hotel.  Building the colors due to the green Ampersand base coat, first with white.  Final finishing came when I came back to the states, but mainly tweaks and small details.  There was so much to get into this small 5 X 7, but the feeling of the village and it's colorful earth pigments is there. 

So there you have it, a recap of 2 of the pieces I did while on my France Plein Air Trip.  Colored pencil really is better thought of as a sketchbook media when on site.  But when you use a sanded surface, work small and use an underpainting of WC pencils things can move faster.  Perhaps not as fast as other media, but getting a saturated look is possible.  When wanting to work bigger I still use pastels, but  I do not love the mess I create nor are my pastel skills highly evolved.   And taking pastels on this long France trip would have meant more weight for my luggage.

Last day in Paris and Monet's Home and Garden

 Claude Monet's garden is about 1 hour 15 min., from our hotel via our special tour bus, and was everything I had hoped it would be and then some.  The artist's home is inviting with the rose arbors lining the garden side of the house.  And the gardens it over looks are so filled with blossoms you hardy knew which direction to look.  My only disappointment was it was so busy (we got there when it opened) there really was not a place to even do a quick sketch.  And we only had 2 hours to see it all.  Inside no photos are allowed but for those who have not seen it, it's decorated to the exact duplicate of the photos displayed inside. With replicas of his paintings hanging in his studio. My favorite part of the house was the blue and white kitchen.  His bedroom was a cheery space that's windows opened up onto his magnificent garden.       
The bridge view today is much the same as in some of his famous paintings but appeared to be lower than I expected.  I suppose it's because he painted from his boat in the water, giving it a higher angle and view.  But again many crowds to contend with thus no drawings ala Plein Aire.

We concluded our afternoon with a trip to the Musee de l'Orangerie  on the grounds of the Louvre gardens.  Containing a tribute to Monet's Water Nympheas series that took over 4 years for him to paint. They fill the walls of 2 long oval rooms. The link here will give you a teaser. www.musee-orangerie

Provence Plein Aire - Roussillion

were mined, in all shades.  Finding the town which is only about 15 min. from Bonnieux was a little tedious as 2 of the roads were washed by mud slides.  So the third option 25 minutes later panned out.  Climbing in switchbacks the whole way up "Bubba" our new vehicle made the trip up smoothly.  Such a change from the vehicle I started out with.  Thank you Hertz!  
Lavender fields in many areas were out (not as much as farther south) and proved good photo ops.  As the driver I had to stay in the vehicle so I'm waiting for the copies my car mates ran out to get while I hung on to the edge of the road.  Look for them in follow up posts when I get back.  Being the designated driver has it's downfalls as I can't shoot so many of the quick shots of this wonderful landscape while driving, like my car mates can.  
As you can see my start for the view of the town was slow to develop.  The Mistral winds were at first a thankful gift for this hot day but soon became.a force to be reckoned with.  As the ochre colored sand and dust blew across the parking lot where I sat in the shade, I soon had more grit in my eyes and teeth than I could stand.   Here I'm working on a 5 X 7 piece of green ampersand pastel-board. laid out initially with 10 % french grey.  The drawing needs corrected some but the various little buildings are at varied angles which I observed first hand while in town.   This is as far as I got in about an hour and 15-20 minutes.  It was difficult to not loose your place while doing the sketch, while holding on to your supplies n the wind.   I hope to add some more to it from my photos.  More to come.

Pre-Plein Air trip to France Carry Ons for a Colored Pencil Artist

Here's what my large carry on bag looks like packed with my takings for the Plein Air Painters trip to Provence, France.  And if you notice the time of this posting you'll realize I'm having one of those sleepless pre trip nights.  So I got right to starting my trip Blog with a "Here's what I'm taking for colored pencil art".


Carry On Luggage to France has to be an exact measurement (which I won't boar you with here) but suffice it to say, my laptop/camera backpack meets that and bags also can weigh no more than 26 lbs.  Fully loaded it is 18.8lbs. so far, but I will add my ziplock bag of liquids (via TSA requirements) and maybe an additional treat for the trip.  The laptop part holds my notebook easily and the padding protects my Prismacolors.  And since they can't be purchased in Europe I need them safe.

The camera is missing as I'm using it for the photo, but you'll see my hot pink camera bag with sd cards, extra battery with charger and a bigger lens next to it.  This all fits in the camera location of the bottom of the bag along with some power bars, Garmin (loaded with Europe Maps) and it's cords, card reader, and French power converter.

My Prismacolor CP pencils are in a 120 count leather organizer, and working clockwise around the table top is:
A few scrap sheets of UART in very small sizes;
Several 5 X 7 ampersand pastelboards and (2) 6  X 12 ones;
My little notebook (for blogging to you all and sending much needed responses to home that I'm doing fine);
A 5 X 8 multimedia sketch journal, with envelope glued to the back inside cover for ephemera from the trip;
A few loose sheets of watercolor scraps to use as a palette for the watercolor cp's;
In the black organizer, a set of 40 Caran d'Ache Supracolor wc cps (I'm trying these out since they wet nicely and also layer dry nicely too!);
Some dry cloths for blending;
Michelin map of Provence, France;
Small bundle of brushes for blending;
Extra Prismas in my favorite colors;
Battery eraser;
Extra batteries for my last Panasonic battery sharpener;
Scotch purple tape for lifting color and watercolor tape for taping down drawing paper;
Small kit with stumps, eraser, mounting putty and 2 Caran d'Ache Neocolor water soluble crayons; Garmin;
Bug wipes and Wetwipes and more Power bars.
Oh and a nifty little hat behind the green kit that stuffs into itself and can clip onto my pack.

If your wondering I have an assortment of papers and a small drawing board in my large check in bag.  I'll add sunscreen from my ziplock bag of liquids when we get there.
And for my personal items (see left hand upper corner) I'll carry my hip slung mini purse loaded with a watercolor cp mini set in the small pencil tin with water brush and larger travel brush for washes, mini journal book, sunglasses, passport, Intrn'l Driver's License, tissues and a few personal items.

In my Italian large bag (on the right) will fit my small mini purse, Paris travel book, hand sharpener so I don't wake sleeping passengers, ziplock bag for pencil shavings, vitamins, business cards ( you never want to miss a chance for a connection) purse size toothbrushes for a fresh mouth during the long 9 hour flight, mini hair clip and 4 X 6 multimedia journal for on plane journaling. 

There you have it, no kitchen sink but enough to keep me busy, drawing, and manageable.  I haven't shown you a few personal items in the big bag but then again a girl has to keep a few things to herself.

The Artist's Journal Workshop by Cathy Johnson- Great Book Review

I have to recommend a book I just received and hadn't been able to put down until I finished it.  The Artists Journal Workshop - creating your life in words and pictures by Cathy Johnson.  It is a real motivator for me an avid sketch book/journal collector.  (Albeit a collector of many empty journals.)  OK I'm not that lazy as many of you may think, it's a long and sorted traumatic story dating back to my childhood when my brother found and read my diary!  Since then I always liked the ideas of journaling thoughts, sketches, and such but I was always afraid someone would read it and not understand my rantings.  Writing has always afforded me a way to work thru feelings, list to do's or want to do's (I'm a crazed list maker, just ask my family) and of course being an artist there is the need to sketch.  Whether to work out a new painting layout, practice my skills, doodle, document a trip or just plan recap my day.

With this book Cathy shows you how she and 27 other insightful artists do just that.  No I'm not a paid North Light Books employee, but I wouldn't mind if they sent me free books to review.  It is just a wonderfully done book, showing you how to get over the blank WHITE page, tips and techniques to get you to make this a habit, suggests materials to use, how to put together an efficient and small journal kit for travel and a more complete one for at home.  No this is not an Art Journal, you know the unique pieces of art in and of themselves made from old books or all collage based.  Although I think an artist's personal journal shows that art is their daily life, and thus a work of art for them.

This was just the book to get me moving again and start to fill some of the journals I have collected.  Next on the to do list is to organize a sketch crawl.  More on that at a later date.

I have been working on a colored pencil wave image, not large and more for practice than anything for a larger piece.  Now back to the colored pencils, oh maybe I should get dinner started..........

Getting on with the Blog.

Although I haven't been blogging here I'm still working and working hard. We had the opening reception of our " A Splash of Tuscany" show on Friday Nov. 20th 2009. All eleven artists who went on our Plein Air painting trip to Tuscany showed their lovely work. Please see the website section for the 5800 Gallery for a link to the show. It will hang until Dec. 18th, 2009.

I have 5 works from Tuscany hanging in the show, one that was half completed on the trip and 3 additions that were studio works from sketches and photos taken on the trip. Being the only pencil artist on the trip (4 oil painters, one photographer, and 6 watercolorists) I was at a disadvantage since my method of working and style of colored pencil work is so slow. I always knew I was a studio artist at heart but I needed to stretch my comfort zone like all growing artists should do. I have vowed to continue my plein air adventures. Even though my initial posts here were to document the trip and my efforts, internet access became my most difficult barrier to doing so. So to recover from my lack of presence on this blog here goes, a little belated though they may be.

What I learned on this fabulous trip:

1. Keeping a daily Travel Diary of the trip has proved to be an invaluable tool for remembering where and what we saw of note each day along with my sketchbook. Some days were so full of travel not much was drawn. So the diary has allowed me to put a location to the date my photos were taken. And with near 1,000 photos to document the trip you can see how this helps.

2. Being present with my artists mind absorbing color, composition, atmosphere, light became an important aspect of translating my sketchbook notes and photos. Since my photography skills are growing along with my artist skills, being able to recall the day and my artistic impressions helped me to recreate the scenes I have worked on so far. Seeing what the camera couldn't relay accurately and being able to change the photo to reflect the day became so important.

3. Packing for the trip: Or should I say overpacking for the trip. Don't do it. Unless your going to hold up in your room at night and use all that stuff! Look for an updated list here for what I would take next time. (I'll post it soon) I found that my lack of speed in drawing plein air hindered how much I really needed during the drawing sessions. And a hat is a must, even if you look bad in hats as I do.

4. Observing other media painters in the field helps an inexperienced landscape painter know where to start. Even though I thought that I had worked that out in advance. I did learn a few things.

5. Your never going to see those pedestrians again so don't be shy if they look over your shoulder and try to ignore them or you'll never get anything done!

6. Most artists have messy sketches when working plein air, don't let perfection slow you down. Get down a thumbnail fast, write your impressions of the day, scene, colors, whatever will help you with recalling it later on. If you have time to leisurely sit and draw do so but keep it small.

7. And finally the people of Italy are warm friendly and welcoming. Do this if you ever get a chance. My fear of driving a stick again was overcome, even though I still would rather be the passenger, I did it. Boy those Tuscan hillside roads are tricky!
